Patients with chronic pain often become dependent on pain medications, even when their pain gets better after treatment. Suboxone may be used in order to help pain patients who want get off pain medications, but don’t want to go through withdrawal.
Suboxone contains buprenorphine and naloxone. Buprenorphine is an opioid partial agonist that is effective at preventing opioid withdrawal and cravings. Naloxone, an opioid antagonist, and is added to offset the sensation of “high” that is often associated with pain medications.
