    What is Pain?

The International Association for the Study of Pain defines pain as: an unpleasant sensory and/or emotional experience associated with actual or potential tissue damage or described in term of such damage. Pain is actually a message sent along the nerves to let the brain know that something is damaging the body. The brain responds by sending a message to the muscles or organ to take action.

In the medical world, all pain is divided into two categories: acute pain and chronic pain.

Acute pain is temporary, and goes away quickly. It's useful, since it usually warns you of sources of harm and tells your body to protect itself while it's healing.

Chronic pain is pain that is unpleasant and lasts for prolonged periods of time. Generally if you've been experiencing pain in the same place for 3 months or more, that pain is likely to be classified as chronic. Since it lasts so long, it does not serve as a useful warning.

What Pain Management Clinic can do

A common cause of severe back pain is muscle strain or tension. In some cases, everyday activities such as sitting behind a computer desk while having poor posture for long hours, or twisting and abruptly turning you neck while exercising. Bad spine injuries like vertebral fractures, whiplash, blood vessel injury, and in some cases paralysis can be caused by work or motor-vehicle accidents. Each pain management plan should be individually discussed with the patient. But the basics are the following: A significant decrease in your pain -- A review and discussion of the risks and side effects associated with taking the pain medications -- An effort to always use the minimum amount of medication possible -- To measurably improve quality of life -- To try to improve the quality and duration of your sleep -- To help you to keep up with the demands of your work -- To improve the quality of your relationship with significant others -- To help improve your overall strength, energy and endurance -- To help you with a possible physical exercise program -- To evaluate the role of other therapies, such as physical therapy, procedures and surgeries.  Coordination among different health specialists such as primary care doctors, psychiatrists and pain management specialists is often required. There is always a possibility that by prescribing opioids, a clinician may unwittingly contribute to a patient's addiction problems. Because opioids are potentially addictive substances, they carry a risk that must be managed if patients are to receive the pain relief they deserve. No medical therapy is risk-free, and pain treatments other than opioids contribute their own potential dangers. For example, the use of non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs such as aspirin or ibuprofen are linked to an estimated 16,500 deaths every year in the United States among patients with rheumatoid arthritis or osteoarthritis.
